I've found this with Indian cultures too, sadly. But I try to give each individual a chance, even if it ends up with disappointment). Teenagers don't always give up their seats on the bus to the elderly, or are reluctant to, perhaps short of a person carrying a cane. But it's good to know that she was thankful for your kindness.
